James Janssen, fortepiano, harpsichord and piano

James Janssen made his debut aged 13, performing Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D Major with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, he was educated at Indiana University and Oberlin College’s Baroque Performance Institute where he studied with
Patrick Allen, Lisa Goode Crawford, Penelope Crawford and Webb Wiggins.

James Janssen is the artistic director and co-founding member of Haydn by the Lake, a period instrument chamber ensemble specializing in the performance of music of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He has appeared with Ars Antigua, the St. Clement Orchestra, and in recital with fellow fortepianist David Schrader. He regularly partners countertenor Mark Crayton in recitals and the duo performs regularly in Chicago, Evanston, Indianapolis and New York, where James Janssen made his debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. He was featured in a recital, also with Mark Crayton, on Chicago’s WFMT in a Live From WFMT broadcast. In 2005, James Janssen and Mark Crayton gave their second recital at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, with another program. In Europe, they will perform in the Amstelrande Concerten series in Amsterdam, and at The Hap’ning Place Conservatory in London.
